Oprah

OK, I admit it, I love her. My friends and family probably get a tad tired of hearing me say, "Well, on Oprah today, she said......." It's scary how many times I can work her name into a conversation :) THat being said, ON Oprah today........ I was watching one of my Tivoed Oprah shows and it was about the sad state of American girls today. There was even a 3 year-old who was obsessed with her looks! I realize that is an extreme example, but it made me really stop and think about the messages I want to send to my daughter. BUt more importantly, it made me think about the messages that I definitely DON'T want to send. After watching the show, I decided right then to stop buying those magazines that are devoted solely to celebrities and their lifestyles----it really is draining and I realized that even though it may seem harmless, I don't want my daughter to think that your life is better just because you are famous or make millions of dollars. We are all really the same inside and the key is not to try and be like someone else, but rather to become more of who YOU were meant to be. I don't want to spend one more second looking at someone else's life and wishing I had a little of what they have. It's silly really, because I know in my heart of hearts that their lives are no better than mine. OK, so maybe they go on more exotic vacations and have more designer handbags, but really that's it. They don't get to see my beautiful little girl smiling at them after her nap and they don't get to feel what I feel every single time my husband walks in the door after work. I want to be a better me and even though it may be a small step, I think not buying those magazines is a step in the right direction......
As for the scrapbooking, I am looking at it in a whole new light thanks to "Clean and Simple Scrapbooking the Sequel." Cathy made me realize that scrapbooks come in all shapes and sizes and I don't have to think of this in the narrow sense---it is about more than just gussying up our pictures. Now I am excited about being our family's historian, our family's reporter. It is something that I am going to pursue with passion and I'm really excited about it.
